How much food can we produce for ourselves locally as a community in case of other unforeseen disruptions in supplies and transportation thereof. Nature as we've been reminded on multiple fronts as of recent, bats last.

1 comment4e.mcallover 2 years agoNo funding for 1619/CRT or anything remotely related to them. Example below
Deep Equity teaches progressive ideology and is controversial among parents and taxpayers because it tells educators to “explicitly reject and resist any parents who disagree with it.” A Virginia teacher with an exemplary record was placed on administrative leave after questioning the school district’s equity training program. Shelly Norden, an English and journalism teacher in Fauquier County Public Schools, ran one of the top journalism programs in the state and won the Kettle Run High School’s 2016 “Teacher of the Year” award. But Norden says administrators target her for speaking out against an equity training program. “I’m not a rabble-rouser,” Norden, who is also a taxpayer in Fauquier County, told The Daily Wire in an interview. “But this wasn’t right, so I started speaking out against it.” The training program, called Deep Equity, was founded by Gary Howard, a white man who believes that white people “are collectively bound and unavoidably complicit in the arrangements of dominance that have systematically favored our racial group over others.”

jkeanover 2 years agoMore Multifamily/Apartment housing
With housing costs climbing out of control, we need more dwellings for our existing residents and those who move into the community. Specifically, there are multiple empty/blighted lots downtown, just north of DTC, that would make great sites for high-density residences. I believe this would not only help control housing costs, but further add to our thriving downtown, helping to make it the envy of the state.
0 comment1Barefootmegover 2 years agoFind creative solutions that provide increased density throughout town, not just downtown and around CSU.
We've been getting a lot of large scale apartments added to downtown and around CSU, but it would be great to find ways to encourage smaller projects that increase density, but that are owned locally. Many of these large apartment builders are from outside of Fort Collins. Encouraging smaller scale projects that could be owned by individuals or smaller locally owned companies might give us more incremental growth that helps retain a sense of place and our "small town charm" while still adding the housing that we desperately need. We also need to be better integrating small commercial centers throughout our neighborhoods so that neighbors can walk to, and meet up at, the neighborhood cafe/brewpub/etc. Corner stores would enable folks to walk or bike to grab a gallon of milk. Northeast and Southeast Fort Collins are food desserts, as well as "hang out with the neighbors" desserts. Small commercial developments could help tremendously in these areas. And Midtown is soooo centrally located, and yet so sprawling. It really needs to share more of the burden of housing our residents. Those funky backyards with spaces that residents never use could become flag lots for tiny homes. We've got to stop letting motor vehicles determine how we build our City and instead put the power in the hands of local residents to incrementally and creatively add spaces for housing, small businesses, and community interaction.

1 comment0Christopher J Reidalmost 3 years agoRemove 4 way stops
Remove the 4 way stops in residential areas and provide a center cone to enable drivers to use the junction in a similar way to roundabouts. This would reduce pollution and noise avoiding unnecessary stops. If this concept is not understood please refer to google "mini roundabouts"
2 comments2MartParkover 2 years agoMatch Planning Staffing with Growth and Development Pressure
I encourage City Council to fill the vacant positions in the Planning Department and to consider adding the necessary staff to fulfill the vision of City Plan. I just re-read Principles and Policies of City Plan and it is striking that an immense amount of responsibility has been placed upon this group. The rate of growth is high and there continues to be extraordinary development pressure. If Fort Collins is to become the unique city that is envisioned, then having the requisite staffing level commensurate with the task is urgently required. Otherwise, I fear, our City will risk losing its unique attributes and begin a long, slow decline into ubiquity. At that point, we can look forward to changing our motto from The Choice City to Anywhere, USA.

0 comment0MSalmost 3 years agoClose the street in front of City Park Pool and add a drop-off area as recommended by City staff and the City Park Tomorrow Design Workshop
Why is there no 2022 Budget BFO offer to address major life/safety issues in City Park? Inasmuch as Council is ultimately responsible for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public, all improvements to City Park identified in the City Park Tomorrow Master Plan that address this fundamental responsibility should be funded before funding improvements that do not address life/safety concerns, to wit, the current $5M 2022 Budget BFO offer 41.3 City Park Train and Tennis & Pickleball Courts Improvements. At the October 22, 2019 City Council meeting, city staff made the following recommendation to Council regarding the phasing of projects identified in the City Park Tomorrow Master Plan - this recommendation was endorsed by 80% of the City Park Design Workshop participants and broadly supported by the community at large: "For a first phase project, staff recommends construction Project B [Pool drop-off and street closure]...This option was very popular among design workshop participants and community members and will improve pedestrian safety and connectivity for park and pool users." Council ultimately decided to fund another critical health, safety, and welfare improvement identified by staff, City Park Design Workshop participants, and community members: new restrooms. This project has been completed. Address the major life/safety issues in City Park before funding any other improvement projects.

The Museo should be one of those sites that we're highlighting among the other things that we highlight every time we do a "We sure love our City" event/video/presentation. I am regularly shocked by the number of people I talk to who have never even heard of the Museo! It's a local treasure and yet most residents have never heard of it. Shame on us!

Barefootmegover 2 years agoWe need to be supporting our local businesses more than we support businesses from outside our borders.
We've done a great job of rallying around our local businesses during the pandemic. Let's learn from that and find ways to support our local businesses with vigor and encouragement going forward. Let's help our local business owners buy the buildings their businesses reside in. Let's recognize the extent to which they often pay more sales tax per acre than our big box stores. And let's take note of how embedded they are in our community in ways that the big box stores often only pay lip service to.
0 comment0Barefootmegover 2 years agoWe need "streetcar commercial districts"... even if our streetcar is no longer a city-wide form off transportation.
Not only should every resident live within walking or biking distance of a park, but they should also live within walking or biking distance of a gallon of milk. We need small, neighborhood level commercial areas where residents can gather together over coffee/tea/beer and get to know each other. We need places that are affordable for small business owners to get their start and they need to be easily accessible by walking, riding, or scootering for everyone, including moms with young kids on bikes. We can't just put our commercial centers along dangerous motorways. We need to be putting them at the smaller crossroads within our neighborhoods. And we seriously need to deal with the food desserts on the eastern edges of town.

2 comments0Barefootmegover 2 years agoNoCo Market online
One of the neatest things that I saw develop during the pandemic was a Northern Colorado marketplace online where small businesses could post their information and residents could get a better sense of the locally owned businesses that they should be supporting. I would love to see Fort Collins spearhead a project that included Wellington, Laporte, Loveland, etc.; in association with all of the related Chambers of Commerce; that would create and manage a website through which local residents could find local shops selling whatever it is they're looking for. The website could give a brief description of what the shops carried with a link to their website or FB page. And it would be searchable... so if I was looking for locally made leather polish (which I know exists) I could find it through the website and either order online or drive to a local shop that sells the item I'm looking for. What a great way to support our local businesses. It would essentially be an online directory specific to us. I know things like Be Local have been tried, but they can't support themselves. But through support from the Municipalities and the Chambers, maybe we could make it happen. Franchises could be listed if they're locally owned, but no big box stores.

Save money on the other contractors, and pay the nonprofit Northern Colorado Wildlife Center to do the clean-ups like they already provide. Paying them would allow them to clean-up MORE city natural areas and it would keep the money going to local nonprofits instead of contractor companies.

0 comment0Barefootmegover 2 years agoWe need to be more aggressive about water conservation.
The City has done a lot to get people to conserve water, but we could do more. We need more aggressive marketing/education to help people realize that they don't need to water their lawns nearly as often as they do, they don't need to flush their toilets every time they use the loo, etc. The Water tour that the City runs is fantastic! It would be great to find a way to do a similar "tour" for bicyclists. Educational signs could also be posted around camp grounds. And schools could have water experts come in to teach students about water in Northern Colorado.
