Outdoor Residential Burning

On March 19, 2019 Fort Collins City Council adopted new rules to limit nuisance smoke from outdoor wood fires. These include:

  • Wood fires must be at least 15 feet from a property line
  • Wood fires must be extinguished by 10:00 pm

These new restrictions do not apply to gas fire pits or fireplaces, or to BBQs or smokers, but all fires must follow safety specifications required by the fire code. Additionally, air pollution nuisance rules prohibit smoke that impacts health, safety or comfortable enjoyment of property.

Enforcement of these new rules will be complaint based, and the City will provide information and advice on how to work with your neighbors to avoid impacts and complaints. More information is available here.
