The Performance Path to Zero Carbon New Construction is a community engagement and energy code update process occurring between 2024-2030. This project's desired outcome is for all new construction in Fort Collins be built to a zero carbon standard within the 2030 code. Why are we doing this?

A critical step to accomplishing this goal is to establish a zero carbon energy code. To be successful, City staff and community members will work together to find incremental, ambitious yet achievable code change opportunities that result in highly efficient, healthier, more durable buildings. Around the globe you can find many examples of how to successfully build to a zero carbon standard, but it is important we find solutions that work well in Fort Collins' climate and economy. For long term success, our code must account for a spectrum of unique climate, housing, industry and workforce considerations.

Staff is committed to listening and supporting community members and businesses that will work within the code, so Fort Collins is ready to successfully implement the path to zero carbon new construction upon City Council adoption. Explore this article to learn our approach for engaging the community.

Furthermore, we would like to learn from anyone who believes they will be impacted by changes to our energy code. Here are some ways to engage with us:

Thanks for the great question Barefootmeg! We love the idea of an infographic, and now that the code development phase is complete, we're working on a public-friendly explainer—stay tuned!

Regarding the use of local and reused materials in new construction: it's definitely on our radar, though not part of the initial 2024 code update. Standards around embodied carbon and building lifecycle assessments are still evolving, but since this project spans three code cycles we expect to explore this more deeply in future updates.

How does the Performance Path to Zero Carbon New Construction impact residential remodeling?

    Casey asked 11 months ago

    Thanks for the question, Casey!

The primary objective of the Performance Path to Zero Carbon New Construction by 2030 is to address new homes and buildings. Future versions of code may impact residential remodeling, but these codes have not been developed yet.

You can stay current with the Existing Buildings section of the International Code Council’s codes at https://codes.iccsafe.org/ and the City of Fort Collins adopted code at https://www.fcgov.com/building/codes

Lastly, always feel free to connect with staff and provide input, you can reach us here: zerocarboncode@fcgov.com.
