Lake Street Safety Project
Project Summary
The City of Fort Collins, in partnership with Colorado State University (CSU), received a Safe Streets for All federal grant to install temporary safety measures on Lake Street between College Avenue and Shields Street. The goal is to reduce traffic speeds and prevent accidents, making Lake Street safer for everyone.
This project supports the City’s and CSU’s Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries.
Several studies have looked at Lake Street and made suggestions for improvements. These ideas, along with recommendations from the City’s Active Modes Plan, may be tested as part of this project.
Project Goals
This project will:
- Slow traffic speeds on Lake Street,
- Reduce unnecessary conflicts caused by cut-through traffic,
- Leverage arterial streets for cross-campus motor vehicle trips,
- Support bus routes and bus stops, and
- Allow emergency vehicle movements.
Project Schedule
We're studying the corridor and developing alternatives now. Community engagement on alternatives will be conducted in fall 2026. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2027.
