On November 1, 2022, City Council adopted a new Land Development Code that would have replaced the 1997 Land Use Code. A referendum was received and certified sufficient by the City Clerk regarding the City’s new Land Development Code. The Fort Collins City Charter grants the registered electors of Fort Collins the power to refer a Council-adopted Ordinance to the voters for approval or rejection. As a result, the new code was repealed and did not go into effect on January 1, 2023. The primary focus of the code changes is supporting housing choice and affordability for current and future Fort Collins residents, in addition to making the code easier to use and understand. The vision and policies adopted in the 2019 City Plan and the 2021 Housing Strategic Plan set the stage for these code changes.
Note: The geographic boundaries of zone districts have NOT changed with the code updates. In some cases, zone districts have been re-named. To find information about zoning for specific parcels, please visit FC Maps.

Single-family housing is NOT "suburban"
I noticed that the planners call single-family detached housing “suburban” in the topic of your upcoming (Oct 23) input session. I would like to object to this characterization which has lately become viewed as pejorative, and which furthermore is not an accurate description of most of the single-family residential areas within Fort Collins. A suburb is defined (by Merriam-Webster) as: 1a : an outlying part of a city or town; b : a smaller community adjacent to or within commuting distance of a city; c suburbs plural : the residential area on the outskirts of a city or large town. The single-family residential zones within Fort Collins are not “suburban neighborhoods.” These neighborhoods should be viewed as they currently are -- one of many housing/neighborhood choices that are and should remain available to Fort Collins residents. If this LUC update proceeds and eliminates single-family, zoning you will create growth in the actual suburban neighborhoods as those of us who prefer to live in a stand-alone house with our own yards flee this city.
