Floodplain Updates

In Fort Collins, there are two kinds of regulated floodplains:

  1. Floodplains regulated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
  2. Floodplains regulated by the City of Fort Collins

Both kinds of regulated floodplains help protect people and property from the impacts of flooding during a 100-year flood event. The City regulates the West Vine floodplain and manages the process for updates or revisions.

Over the years, updated floodplain and floodway boundaries have been developed for the West Vine Basin using detailed topographic data and the latest hydraulic modeling software. These boundaries are the most accurate and up-to-date representation of flood risk in the basin. If you live in the West Vine Basin, please take a moment to view the preliminary updated floodplain map.

Adoption of the preliminary updated floodplain is anticipated to take place later this year. Because the West Vine floodplain is located within the City of Fort Collins and Larimer County, a separate adoption process will be undertaken by each jurisdiction. Learn about the County adoption process.

We want to hear from you:

  • Ask questions through the "General Questions" tab, below.
  • Add a comment on the preliminary updated floodplain map and the appropriate City or County staff will get back to you.
  • City of Fort Collins Residents: Contact Heidi Hansen | Floodplain Management | hhansen@fcgov.com | 970-221-6854
  • Larimer County Residents: Contact Devin Traff | Larimer County Engineering | traffdc@larimer.org | 970-498-5731

All feedback must be received by June 26, 2021, to be considered prior to Utilities' Executive Director review and adoption.

Master Plan Updates

The City, in partnership with Larimer County, is in the process of updating the Selected Plan portion of the basin’s Stormwater Master Plan. The Selected Plan is an important step in the Master Planning Process. It evaluates alternatives that address the flood risk identified in the floodplain update and develops a recommended plan of improvements. In addition to identifying solutions to reduce flood risk, the Selected Plan evaluates opportunities for water quality improvements, stream rehabilitation, habitat enhancement, open space preservation and recreation (e.g., parks, trail systems).
